Being Celebrated by Others

As my friends and family members surrounded me to shower their love on the joyous occasion of International Women’s Day, I was unable to relate to the concept of the day itself.

A small voice kept whispering in my ears – “Why are women celebrated only for one day? Why not the whole year round? And why do we need somebody else to celebrate us? Why don’t we celebrate ourselves? How do we celebrate ourselves?” 🤔

As the evening progressed, the silent voice in my ears grew louder and louder. I was unable to shed the confused feelings I had been feeling. As an African proverb goes – “The best way to eat an elephant in your path is to cut him up into little pieces” I, too, decided to tackle my thoughts systematically. But first, I needed to sleep!

Celebrating Myself

The next morning I sprung out of my bed, ready to face my day. I had completely forgotten about all the questions from the previous evening. I looked myself in the mirror and said out aloud – “What should I, Magbè Silué, do differently today?”

“Celebrate Yourself!’’, came the reply from the mirror-me.
“But, how?”

I suppose that is what being a woman is about: stepping into someone else’s shoes, and doing the best one can do to uplift others. Maybe that is how I ought to celebrate Magbè Silué, basking in happiness for having made a tiny difference in someone’s world.
