HIBISCUS RECIPES

The hibiscus flower has an enchanting, slightly-tart taste that adds flavor and vitamin C to whatever you decide to make. Our wonderful, all-natural hibiscus mix-in has no added ingredients. Add it to drinks, popsicles, ice cubes and more.

HIBISCUS MARGARITA

Ingredients

  • 1 Bottle Hibiscus Original
  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • 3 tbsp tequila
  • 4 to 5 ice cubes

Directions        

  1. Place Makomas Hibiscus Original, lime juice, tequila and ice in a cocktail shaker and shake well.
  2. Pour into margarita glasses
  3. Salt the rim
  4. Garnish with a wedge of lime.
  5. Sit back and sip.
  6. Enjoy !
HIBISCUS JELLY

Ingredients

  • 1⁄4 cup Makomas Dried Hibiscus Flowers
  • 2 cups Makomas Baobab Acai Juice
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • Juice of ½ Lemon
  • 1 3⁄4 ounces dry pectin
  • 5 1⁄2 cups sugar

Directions        

  1. Pour boiling water over the Makomas Dried Hibiscus Flowers and steep for 2 to 3 hours
  2. Strain the liquid and pour into a heavy saucepan.
  3. Add Makomas Baobab Acai Juice, vinegar, lemon juice and dry pectin and bring to a boil.
  4. Add sugar and return to a rolling boil.
  5. Ladle into jam bowls and allow to set.
  6. Serve with ice cream, custard or fruit
  7. Enjoy !
STRAWBERRY HIBISCUS JAM

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Makomas Dried Hibiscus Flowers
  • 2 pounds fresh strawberries, chopped
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • Juice of 2 large lemons

Directions        

  1. Add sugar to the chopped strawberries in a bowl
  2. Put in the refrigerator to chill for 3 to 4 hours
  3. Place the Makomas Dried Hibiscus Flowers in a bowl and cover with ½ cup boiling water.
  4. Allow to steep for 15 minutes.
  5. Strain the liquid
  6. Put the strawberries and hibiscus liquid in a saucepan and bring to boil.
  7. Allow to simmer stirring now and then until required consistency is achieved.
  8. Add lemon juice and simmer for 5 minutes more.
  9. Remove from heat and pour into clean jars.
  10. Spread on toast, muffins or cakes.
  11. Enjoy !
JAMICAN HIBISCUS COOLER

Ingredients

  • Get 5 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup of Makomas dried hibiscus flowers
  • 1/2 cup Agave Nectar or Organic Honey
  • Juice of ½ a Lemon

Directions        

  1. Bring 2 and ½ cups of water to boil
  2. Pour the rest of the water in a pitcher add the sweetener and lemon juice and mix well.
  3. Keep the Makomas Dried Hibiscus Flowers in a bowl, pour over the hot water and let steep for 10 to 15 minutes or until water turns a dark red color.
  4. Strain the Hibiscus water and mix with the sweet lemon water.
  5. Keep in fridge to chill.
  6. Serve in a cooler glass with a slice of lemon
  7. Enjoy!
HIBISCUS FROASTING FOR CAKES & COOKIES

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp Makomas Dried Hibiscus Flowers
  • 16 oz cream cheese
  • 1 cup butter
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp salt

Directions        

  1. Grind the Makomas Dried Hibiscus Flowers in a grinder and set aside
  2. Cream the butter, add cream cheese and beat until smooth
  3. While continuing to beat, slowly add the sugar.
  4. Add vanilla, salt, Makomas dried hibiscus flowers and mix well
  5. Use on cakes, cookies, donuts, bread or on anything you like
  6. Enjoy!
HIBISCUS LOAF CAKE

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Makomas Dried Hibiscus Flowers
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 11/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 6 tbsp salted butter
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 11/2 cup sugar
  • 3 large beaten eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup Water

Directions        

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease the inside of a 9 x 5 inch loaf pan
  2. Bring water to boil, take off heat and add Makomas Dried Hibiscus Flowers and lemon juice. Allow to steep for about 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. Add baking powder and baking soda to the flour and whisk to mix well.
  4. Cream the butter and add oil and sugar while beating with an electric beater till fluffy. While continuing to beat, slowly add eggs until mixed well.
  5. Keep beating while alternately adding parts of the flour and milk. Whisk until the batter combines well.
  6. Add vanilla and Hibiscus flowers to the batter and mix well.
  7. Transfer to greased loaf pan and bake for 35 to 40 minutes.
  8. Test cake with a knife and place on cooling rack.
  9. Slice and serve with Hibiscus sauce or Frosting
  10. Enjoy!
Hibiscus Rice

Ingredients:

  • 2 ½ cups cooked rice
  • 1/4 cup MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flowers soaked and finely chopped
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion thinly sliced
  • ¼ tbsp MKAOMAS Ginger Powder
  • ½ tbsp garlic powder
  • Greens of 2 scallions thinly sliced
  • Salt to taste

 

Directions

  1. Sauté the onion in 1 tbsp olive oil and keep aside.
  2. Pour the remaining oil into the pan add the scallions, eggs, half of the MAKOMAS. Hibiscus Dried Flowers and stir until you get a soft scramble.
  3. Add the sautéed onion, rice, ginger powder, garlic powder, salt and toss to mix well.
  4. Garnish with the remaining MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flowers and serve hot.

 

Hibiscus Relish

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flowers soaked in till soft and finely chopped
  • ¼ cup Sugar
  • 2 tbsp MAKOMAS Ginger Original
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 large tart apple peeled and finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped red onions
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • Salt, to taste

 

Directions:

  1. Cook all ingredients together in a saucepan on a slow heat till cooked and mixed well.
  2. Blend well in a blender till smooth.
  3. Store in the fridge in a jar.
  4. Serve with appetizers, in burgers or with meat dishes.

 

Purple Hibiscus Soup

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flowers
  • 2 beetroots peeled and chopped
  • 1 medium onion roughly chopped
  • 3 cups vegetable stock
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Juice of ½ a lemon
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Lightly sauté the beetroot, onion, and garlic in olive oil.
  2. Pour over the vegetable stock and add ¾ of the MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flowers.
  3. Cook until vegetables are soft.
  4. Blend well till smooth.
  5. Add lemon juice and season with salt and pepper.
  6. Garnish with the rest of the hibiscus flowers and serve with hot buttered toast.
Hibiscus Sprinkled Cookies

Ingredients:

1/2 cup MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flowers

3 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 tsp plus 2 pinches salt

2 ½  sticks unsalted butter

2 cups confectioners sugar

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Zest of 1/2 lime

2 teaspoons lime juice 

2 tbsp MAKOMAS honey

Directions:

 

Coarsely grind MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flowers in a grinder.

Whisk half of it with the flour and ½ tsp salt.

Beat the butter with ¾ of confectioners’ sugar until fluffy.

Add the vanilla, lime zest and honey.

Beat in the flour mix.

Preheat oven racks to 350 degrees F.

Roll balls of the dough and arrange on baking sheets.

Bake till light golden.

Cool on racks.

Whisk the remaining confectioners’ sugar,  lime juice and  salt.

Dip the front of the cookie and let them stand for a few minutes.

Serve with a sprinkle of ground MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flowers.

Hibiscus Butter

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flowers
  • 2 sticks of butter

Directions:

Bring butter to a simmer and turn down heat.

Add MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flowers

Allow to cool.

Use for cakes, cookies and sauces.

Store in a cool place.

African Hibiscus Cooler

 

 

Ingredients:

  • 5 cups of water

  • 1/2 cup organic Honey
  • Juice of ½ a Lemon

Directions:

  1. Bring 2 and ½ cups of water to boil.
  2. Pour the rest of the water in a pitcher add honey and lemon juice and mix well.
  3. Keep the MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flowers in a bowl, pour over the hot water and let steep for 10 to 15 minutes or until water turns a dark red color.
  4. Strain the Hibiscus water and mix with the sweet lemon water.
  5. Keep in fridge to chill.
  6. Serve in a cooler glass with a slice of lemon.
Hibiscus Tea (Agua de Jamaica)

A recipe using MAKOMAS dried hibiscus flowers: 

Ingredients: 

  • 1 cup dried hibiscus flowers (MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flower) 
  • 4 cups water 
  • 1/4 cup honey or sweetener of your choice (optional) 
  • Lime wedges (for garnish) 
  • Ice cubes 

Instructions: 

  1. In a saucepan, bring the water to a boil. 
  1. Once the water is boiling, add the dried hibiscus flowers to the saucepan and remove it from heat. 
  1. Let the hibiscus flowers steep in the hot water for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to infuse. 
  1. After steeping, strain the liquid into a pitcher or container, discarding the hibiscus flowers. 
  1. If desired, add honey or your preferred sweetener to the strained hibiscus tea. Stir well to dissolve the sweetener. Taste and adjust the sweetness according to your preference. 
  1. Place the pitcher or container in the refrigerator and let the hibiscus tea chill for at least 1 hour. 
  1. When ready to serve, fill glasses with ice cubes and pour the chilled hibiscus tea over the ice. 
  1. Garnish each glass with a lime wedge for added flavor.

MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flower Cocktail

Ingredients: 

  • 2 tablespoons MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flowers 
  • 1 cup water 
  • 1/4 cup honey or agave syrup (adjust to taste) 
  • 1 cup sparkling water 
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 
  • Ice cubes 
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish 
  • Lemon slices for garnish 

Instructions: 

  1. In a small saucepan, bring the water to a boil. Add the MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flowers to the boiling water and let them steep for about 10 minutes. This will create a concentrated hibiscus tea. 
  1. After steeping, strain the hibiscus tea into a bowl or pitcher, discarding the used flowers. 
  1. Add honey or agave syrup to the hibiscus tea and stir until it’s fully dissolved. Adjust the sweetness to your preference. 
  1. Let the hibiscus tea cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to chill. 
  1. In a separate pitcher, mix the chilled hibiscus tea with sparkling water and fresh lemon juice. 
  1. Fill glasses with ice cubes and pour the hibiscus cocktail over the ice. 
  1. Garnish each glass with fresh mint leaves and a slice of lemon for an extra refreshing touch. 
  1. Stir gently, and your MAKOMAS Dried Hibiscus Flower Cocktail is ready to enjoy! 
Hibiscus Flower Tacos

Ingredients: 

Instructions: 

  1. Boil hibiscus flowers until tender. 
  1. Sauté with desired seasonings. 
  1. Fill tortillas with hibiscus, avocado, cilantro, and onion.
