I am in my home country, Côte d’Ivoire, wandering through a quiet farm on an intensely hot day. The sun is high and relentless, and I feel a wave of anxiety rise with the sweltering heat. I search for water, but there’s none in sight.
I notice some local women farmers toiling in the fields. I can trace the sunlight reflecting off their sweat. They must be preparing the land for the next sowing season. I call out for help, but they don’t hear me. I decide to keep walking, hoping to find relief somewhere ahead.
Just as I’m about to give up in desperation, a voice calls out:
“Magbè, oh dear child. Don’t give up just yet. Come near me to find both water and shade.”
I look around and find no one in the vicinity. Who was speaking to me? The tree in front of me has roots shooting out of its gigantic trunk. It seems as if it’s stuck upside down. At the next moment, panic hits me and I feel the life draining out of me.
“Relax, it’s just me: your old and wise friend, Baobab!”
My alarm rings. I wake up with a start.
It takes me a few minutes to regain my bearings. I reassure myself it was just a dream, though it lingers vividly. I decided to distract myself by making my favorite morning smoothie: strawberry.
In a blender, I add 10 frozen strawberries, ½ cup of yogurt, and ¼ teaspoon of honey. As I reach to press the start button on the machine, I am reminded of my favorite ingredient: MAKOMAS Dried Baobab Powder.
I stopped dead in my tracks.
Baobab, wasn’t it the tree from my dream?
Why was I frightened by it? Why did the upside-down look surprise me? I’ve seen Baobab trees up close since childhood. That’s when the memory resurfaces, the folklore passed down through generations.
The Baobab tree, scientifically known as Adansonia digitata, is more than just a tree. It provides life-sustaining resources: food, water, and medicine. Its fruit, roots, and leaves are all edible and rich in nutrients, earning it the title of “The Tree of Life.”
It’s native to parts of Africa and is easily recognized by its massive trunk, iconic silhouette, and extraordinary longevity. (No wonder it called itself wise in my dream.)
And just like that, the Tree of Life quietly breathes a little life back into me. I feel like myself again. 😊
